<image:title>Interview: One on One with Olivier - How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get to be a Nutrition, Health, and Life Coach?</image:title>
<image:caption>I started coaching full time in 2014 and I have been coaching endurance sports with a heavy focus on triathlon. I chose ‘Beyond The Line’ as the name for my coaching company because I aimed at not only helping my athletes reach the finish line but also wanted to ingrain in them a lifestyle that remains way after the finishing chute is crossed. I also wanted to provide them with health and balance during the journey. However, very soon, I realised that endurance sports, especially triathlon with its extreme demands, was sometimes, in fact, damaging health. I myself suffered a meltdown. It was insidious and slow, but it was not pretty. I used to be a very competitive triathlete, being the first Ironman athlete in Hong Kong to break the 9h30 barriers, in 2010. While I was a full time international banker at the time, with two very young children, I managed to juggle with all my responsibilities for years. Around 2012-2013, things started to change. I started to feel bloated every day. My training intensity, duration and frequency, started to slow down inexorably. I left the stressful banking world in late 2013 and created Beyond The Line but things got progressively worse. In 2016 I had to stop training early mornings. I started to suffer from chronic fatigue. I had to nap every day after lunch. Then I had to have a second nap most days. My ideas became blurry, brain fog became my new norm, I couldn’t learn anything new. At that time anxiety skyrocketed as I couldn’t recognise myself anymore. Where was the athlete, where was the perennial student, where was the optimistic young mind? In 2018 I was diagnosed with depression, which was another blow to my ego. Meanwhile I kept fighting, even in the midst of the worst moments. Because it all started with digestion, I focused my efforts on nutrition. I tried every diet recommendations under the sun. Nothing changed. I spent thousands in expensive supplements, doctors appointments, gut tests. I saw all kinds of practitioners. In the process, I passed a Nutrition Degree from Precision Nutrition, first to help myself, then for my clients. It took me years to realise that nutrition was just one part of the equation. Indeed, my digestion was impaired because my level of anxiety was so high that it was affecting all my bodily functions, and the digestive system happens to be the weak link in my body. Now, my life was not excessively stressful in itself, it was my poor management of stress that was the issue. So I resumed meditation and yoga that I had stopped years ago, and started a Health and Life coach programme, first for myself once again, then for the others. While it is impossible to know for sure what extracted me first out of my hole of suffering, receiving Health and Life coaching sessions from fellow student coaches was of great help. From then on the story got better, I finished my Health and Life coaching degree, enjoying every single day of the process. I also learnt Neuro Linguistic Programming right after this, and discovered the amazing effect of hypnotherapy, as a patient and as a coach. My first Nutrition, Health and Life coaching clients were either current or past coached athletes. I realised while working with them the amazing impact I was having. I also realised that my expertise in Nutrition, Health and Life coaching, my own life journey, and my spiritual discoveries while working on myself were extremely useful to become a full-time holistic coach, instead of a sport coach using Health, Life and Nutrition coaching as a side gig.</image:caption>

<image:title>Interview: One on One with Olivier - What kind of clients do you work with?</image:title>
<image:caption>My clients are usually middle-aged men and women who feel stuck in their life, in their job, in their work and/or in their sport. I work with people who are self-motivated, open-minded and are looking for self-empowerment. I expect my clients to do their homework without me having to remind them (self-motivated), to agree to try new approach without me having to convince through lengthy discussions (open-minded) and to like the fact that we work as a partnering team and that in the end, the result is in their hands, not mine (self-empowerment). I work best with athletes, or with people with an athlete mindset, meaning people who like to overcome challenges and are not afraid to put the necessary work to improve. If they expect short-cuts, health and mental ‘hacks’ and easy ways, I am not the right coach for them. If they do have an athlete mindset, though, what they will get with me is as a transformational experience where they are consistently taking action. No more worrying whether they will ever find something that works for them: they will open up to a different way of thinking that will open up new doors. One word of caution, though: I am not equipped to deal with clinical illnesses, and I will invite clients to consult a specialised practitioner instead of me if I identify that there is a necessity for it.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ff3d96eca2bed0e1eb6946c/1609827132599-ME1ZKT8RBYTEFB30QU37/201216_BTL-421.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Interview: One on One with Olivier - How are you different from other Health Coaches?</image:title>
<image:caption>Many health coaches give a checklist of what to do and what not to do. That, in fact, rarely ever works, as most issues are not about the lack of knowledge, it is about the implementation part, the resistance to change -conscious or unconscious. It is also about the inability to cope with the stress of day-to-day life. Thus, first and foremost, my coaching is about transforming beliefs and mindsets so that my clients can be present with themselves and their lives in a whole new way and take back control of their life. Tackling all the above is a lot on their own and often overwhelming to the point that it is easier to stay where they are. Coaching is a process that is facilitated in a specific way so they can be different, without having to think about being different. The first step is raising their awareness about what they really desire for themselves and their lives. What also defines my coaching style is to be open-minded to different techniques and practices. I use what works for my client, not some kind of ‘proven recipe’. For some, I use ‘pure coaching’ methods, for others, I add Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques, and for others, hypnotherapy. The client and his issues dictate what I do.</image:caption>

<image:title>Corporate Referrals - My name is Valérie Richard and I work at Société Générale Hong Kong, currently managing an IT and Operation team on EQD Vanilla and I am also the Chairman of the SG Staff Club which organizes activities for employees outside of their day to day job, from running and swimming to freediving and mindfulness. Since when have you known Olivier? Since 2015 I think. Around that time, Olivier helped launch the Staff Club Swimming and Running through his company Beyond The Line and I was in charge of the Staff Club running group. He was also a regular speaker as he shared with us his 80km Swim around Lantau Island challenge, talked about how to prepare for the Trailwalker (the largest and oldest 100k trail running race in the region), how to choose your running shoes, how to deal with stress in a corporate environment, etc. Tell us more about Olivier’s coaching style. Olivier’s main business with Beyond The Line is in fact online coaching, but he loves coaching us bankers during lunchtime because he was himself one of us. Olivier usually runs along with us and he has incorporated many different practices, such as video analysis, running plans, drills, stretching, STRAVA challenges, while providing Zoom group calls when he felt that there was a need for them (e.g. hydration in summer). His main point has always been to keep us motivated even when all he gets is slightly under 60min of a bunch of stressed employees during their lunch break. What about Olivier’s performance as a coach? Some employees that were not running at all became regular runners. Some runners who used to run 45min for a 10k now comfortably go under 40min. Some who were afraid to do long distances have tackled 100k races. We all learnt a lot in the process, in terms of how to train, technique, recovery, nutrition, mental strength. Olivier has a knack for understanding what it is to work in an international banking environment and adapts the training accordingly. He knows when to push and when to release the pressure. Anything else that stands out? COVID time has obviously pushed everybody out of their comfort zone. Olivier was no exception, and it’s in times of crisis that we see the true value of someone. In order to compensate for the impossibility to gather to train and the resulting drop in runners’ motivation, Olivier created training plans that were structured towards time trials that can be run alone. Each time there was a respite in the restrictions, Olivier made sure to be physically present -while following the rules- to help re-create an impetus. I personally follow Olivier on a few other projects of his -like the introduction of the sport of Swimrun in Hong Kong and the launch of successful group rides on the ZWIFT indoor cycling platform- and I am equally impressed by what he has created in these arenas. Finally I want to insist again on the quality of the coaching and support we received along all these years; It is not easy to step out of the desk to exercise at lunch time, but we kept on coming back, under the scorching sun or under pouring rain because we knew it was worth it!</image:title>

<image:title>Corporate Referrals - What a great guy! So inspiring that such a “tough” man can share so openly his experience and his thoughts. He comes across as very authentic and “real”. I think he is a good proof that you don’t have to be aggressive, exaggerating or overwhelming to be strong. Actually all the men in my group referred to him later as a thought provoker on how they balance their own work and life. We loved him sharing his work experiences and his passion. Olivier seems to me to be a nice guy and very humble. His manner and attitude is caring and approachable. The sharing of his personal story came across in a very natural way and touched my emotions. It certainly provoked some deeper thinking from my part which, I believe, was the purpose of his presence. I also have the impression that the rest of the group appreciated him in the same or similar way. In summary Olivier seems like a wonderful extremely likeable man and obviously has great personal determination / depth and has an extremely interesting personal history. As an “external consultant” he has a very different profile than what we are normally used to and his message is less in the words but rather than on a personal and emotional level. A different and new angle when it comes to “personal development”. All in all, the three people on my group who NEVER had hiked before ALL said they will now start walking in nature with their families as it gave them such a great feeling.</image:title>

<image:title>Olivier Baillet - NUTRITION COACHING</image:title>
<image:caption>I solidified my knowledge about nutrition by studying. I first got certified with Precision Nutrition, which focuses on sports nutrition. I then became certified with Health Coach Institute HCI, which provides a Health Coaching degree and a Health Coaching Degree with a heavy focus on nutrition. It is during HCI that I was exposed to a new idea that changed my focus altogether: ‘It’s not only about what you eat, it’s also about who you are when you eat’. In a nutshell, our state of mind when we are eating has a big impact on your capacity to digest and extract the right nutrients from your food. In time, our stress level impacts the level of inflammation in our gut, the propensity to store fat and our weight, among other things, even if we eat the ‘perfect’ food all the time. Besides, most of us know, roughly, what is the ‘right’ food for our body, and what is not. Still, we often eat the food that makes us miserable and sick on the long-term. Such an unhealthy relationship with food is often the symptom of something else, something that gets in the way. This understanding of the relationship between mood/mindset and nutrition is a cornerstone of my coaching practice. When you work with me, you will not get meal plans. I will not be your guru. I will be your partner. We will build together new sustainable nutritional habits that will give you more energy, make you leaner and clearer in your mind, so that you can do greater things in your life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a typical Frenchman, I used to consider food as a source of pleasure, a way to socialise and have a good time. That changed when I became an endurance athlete in my late twenties, as I started to see food as an energy source: I was not eating anymore, I was ‘fuelling my body’. With that came a certain level of anxiety towards food, as I started to classify certain types of food as detrimental to performance, labelling certain food as ‘bad’. Life went on, and with the increase in responsibility and stress, especially at work, I started to have digestive issues in my early forties. As a result, I became more and more controlling with my food… and my digestive problems got worse and worse. I tried most of the diets, such as Paleo, Vegan, Keto. I tried Autoimmune and Longevity diets, did a few detox, a bit of juicing and a bit of fasting. Some things did make me feel better, but after a few weeks, the benefits invariably disappeared.</image:caption>

<image:title>Olivier Baillet - MY MISSION STATEMENT - We are all different and we all have ways to function that are unique: we all have a specific ‘user manual’. However, we live in an environment plagued with so much background noise that we have lost contact with our own self. In the process, most of us have also got disconnected from our internal wisdom. Our body sends us signals when it gets into distress, but we tend to ignore them. Our mind sometimes cripples us with fear, doubt, guilt, for days, years, decades… until our body gets sick, really sick. Only then, we take notice, only then, we start to look for solutions. Often, it is late, very late. We are already so deeply entrenched into our physical and mental black hole that it then takes years, tons of energy and money to finally get back to normal. Sadly, it would have taken just a few steps if we had dealt with it at an early stage. I am here to warn you of the danger of exercising too much, working too hard, living too fast, without having first laid solid mental and physical foundations. I am here to help you deal with issues that may steal years of your life, kill your joy, destabilise your identity, before things get out of control. Our society prides the winners at all cost and oversimplifies the success stories, creating overnight heroes. We tend to think that we should be like these fabricated icons. Deep down though, we all know that life is more complex than this, but we tend to bury this obvious truth. I want to show you the real side of success and failure, that one can be a world-class amateur Triathlon Ironman athlete, have a great career and a wonderful family, and be eaten alive by mental demons and have crippling health issues. By sharing my own vulnerability, I want to create the climate of confidence that is necessary to initiate changes.</image:title>

<image:title>Olivier Baillet - MY MISSION STATEMENT - I am an athlete who can endure a lot of pain and I can be really strong. I am also a man who faces internal demons and sunk into depression where all willpower and energy got annihilated. I want to leverage on my image of ‘Ironman’ and show my ambivalence. Courage is not what we think, strength is not a physical thing, self-centeredness leads to nowhere. Sparks of awareness in people can be instantaneous: sometimes it’s just a sentence, a one minute movie, a gesture, that starts the journey. The more I expose myself and share, the more chances I have to help trigger changes and be an actor of transformation.</image:title>

<image:title>Olivier Baillet - ONLINE CLASSES - I don’t intend to become an ‘influencer’. Nothing that I write, shoot and share will ever become viral. With me though, you are sure to get authenticity, professionalism and hard facts. So when it comes to operate transformation and growth, here is what I have to say: Most people look for quick fixes, for ‘hacks’. That might work for software and video games, but when it comes to the human body and mind, changes occur at a pace that may often feel painstakingly slow. Endurance sports taught me that there is no hack, no new scientific discovery that change the rules of the game. Good old-fashioned stamina, focus and self-belief still work, now as well as ever, and cannot be replaced. Our online courses provide you with the framework, the necessary level of understanding, the reasons behind our recommendations, and the testimonies that you need to launch your personal transformation, as well as the trajectory to follow. You will still have to do the work, though. However, you will be aware of what you are doing, how you should be doing it, and why you are doing it. Armed with intention, you will succeed where you may have failed before. We have created these classes based on sessions that we had with our clients, in our endurance sports and health, life and nutrition coaching practice. They came from the realisation that they would meet needs that are widespread and vivid. Choose one class to start with, try it, implement it, and come back for more!</image:title>

<image:title>Olivier Baillet - MY STORY - ‘I am strong and I am vulnerable. I am a learner of life and I constantly evolve. I am no different from you. What separates me from you is that I have set my life in order to be in a position to help you for a living. I have the knowledge, the time, the energy for this, and it is my calling.’</image:title>
<image:caption>I used to identify myself with my sports results, my career, my athletic body. They helped me feel safer, providing some sort of comforting proof that ‘I am enough’. It did help for a while until things started to crumble: First burnout at 39. On the verge of a second burnout at 43 and after several panic attacks, I decided to leave my international banking career. 10 times Ironman Triathlon finisher, including 4 times Ironman Triathlon World Championship qualifier. I thought these titles would define me forever. I was wrong. Around 2013, I started to get severe intestinal issues, then generalized inflammation, followed by chronic fatigue. The last straw was such terrible constant brain fog that I thought I had early dementia. I became, in my mind’s eye, a ‘nobody’. Add to this the reality of aging that I desperately tried to deny until I couldn’t anymore, and the decease of two of my closest family members.</image:caption>

<image:title>Olivier Baillet - MY STORY</image:title>
<image:caption>I have now learned to make peace with my story. It was brutal to go from being one of the fastest triathletes in Asia (where I lived at the time) to waking up exhausted for years and needing to nap twice a day, to having all my muscles burn from inflammation and not being able to climb stairs, to losing any sense of pleasure in life, expecting nothing, looking forward to nothing. I now understand that it is part of my journey. Coming back from the half-dead, I found my calling: I want to help. Help what, whom, how? Help the athlete struggling with age, loss of self-confidence or sudden lack of motivation. Help the runner come back from injury stronger than ever, by using his time off to strengthen what he neglected. Help the triathlete get rid of his usual bout of panic before the swim mass start. Help the exercise-addict reinstall balance in his life. Help the alpha male recognize his vulnerability and transform it into a strength. Help with exercise-induced disordered eating. Help to better deal with stress, from sports and from life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Plastic Free Seas is a Hong Kong-based environmental charity focused on changing the way we all view and use plastics in society today, through education and action campaigns. In 2014, my friend and coached swimmer Bruce Pye and myself swam around Lantau Island, the largest island in Hong Kong, and help raise money and awareness for the plastic issue in Hong Kong. The swim was over 75km long and we swam over 15k every day for 5 days. This feat had never been done before, and was never repeated after. We landed on the front page of the main newspaper in Hong Kong, the South China Morning Post and helped raise the profile of the charity, as well as money to fund projects for school students.</image:caption>

<image:title>Olivier Baillet - GIVING BACK - Plant-Powered Athlete T-shirt</image:title>
<image:caption>We all know how damaging to the planet the industrial meat and fish industry is. I know that one of the hurdles for more athletes to eat less meat is the fear of lacking protein and create imbalances. I looked online for a T-shirt that would be a bit provocative, showing that you can eat a plant-based diet and be strong, and couldn’t find one. So… I created it. I wore it at every race and posted it on social media. I sold a few until my stock finished. I’m ready to re-print if there is interest.</image:caption>

<image:title>Olivier Baillet - HEALTH & LIFE COACHING - ‘I came into the Health and Life Coaching realm through extreme endurance sport. If you’re like me, you probably know that pain in sport is a signal that you can choose to ignore. But sport is not life, and ignoring life pain and suffering will only get you so far, until it bites you. Deal with your painful issues, don’t ignore them. I am here to help.’</image:title>
<image:caption>When I created Beyond The Line in 2014, my goal was to help athletes reach their sporting goals. I employed all my knowledge and expertise to craft the best training plans I could, using a scientific mix of techniques that I had experimented over the years myself. It brought about great results. But as my own personal issues were becoming more prevalent, I progressively realized that what athletes needed was much more than a training plan.</image:caption>

<image:title>Olivier Baillet - HEALTH & LIFE COACHING - Endurance sports tend to attract overachievers who never stop and always want more. However, heavy training may contribute to physical and mental diseases by adding daily stress load, physical and mental, to people already in a constant alert mode from life demands. In order to better support some of these extreme athletes, I started to learn new skills such as Nutrition Coaching, Health and Life Coaching, Neuro Linguistic Programming, different types of meditation and breathing techniques, as well as a few hypnotic practices. I integrated all this into my coaching programs. Most of them are based on one-on-one (online) personal sessions. My experience shows that a dozen sessions spread over 12 weeks works best. I mainly work with ‘athletes’, but don’t get fooled by the word. What I mean by the word athlete is someone who is naturally self-motivated and exercise often. If you have an issue to work on and have this mindset, we should be able to work together. Coaching requires a high level of dedication that not everybody can make nor is willing to make, so I have also created courses to help you improve your health.</image:title>
